Hartford Seminary Adjunct Professor Ahmed Nezar Kobeisy has published an important resource for professionals who counsel Muslims. The book Counseling American Muslims: Understanding the Faith and Helping the People is published in 2004 by Praeger in their "Contributions in Psychology" series.

 

Chaplaincy Employment Positions

ASSISTANT CHAPLAIN

Bates College invites applications for an Assistant Chaplain. The position is three quarters time, nine months a year, August 15 through May 15, with benefits prorated to half-time. The Assistant Chaplain works with the Multifaith Chaplain to coordinate multi-faith programs and projects that advance religious pluralism. The Assistant Chaplain: offers pastoral conversation and spiritual guidance to students, staff and faculty; assists with planning, implementation and direct participation in a variety of programs that engage students in social service and social justice projects; assists in the design of occasional rituals, services and special events; assists with lectures, seminars and series that explore and promote the intellectual and ethical dimensions of the spiritual life; offers pastoral care to individuals and to the campus as a whole as necessary, particularly with respect to crisis intervention and support.

Required qualification is formal academic training in religious studies. Pastoral training and experience is preferred. Experience in a professional position in the religious and spiritual life office of a college or university is preferred. A demonstrated ability to work effectively in an environment that prizes and promotes diversity is a necessity. The desire, knowledge and capacity to work effectively with people of all religious traditions and with those who have no formal religious affiliation, and/or who are openly skeptical about such affiliations, is a necessity. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
